Michael Smith is a veteran songwriter whose name may be unfamiliar but whose songs are almost universally known. Michael has been singing and writing since the early 1960s and his rich and challenging songs, including "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River", have been recorded by more than 30 performers. The list includes Jimmy Buffet, Steve Goodman, Suzy Bogguss, Jerry Jeff Walker, Liam Clancy, Gordon Bok, The Four Freshman, Spanky and Our Gang, Small Potatoes, Anne Hills and many others. In the late 1980s Michael was asked to write the music for the Steppenwolf Theatre production of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," and he toured with that production for two years, from Chicago to La Jolla, California, and London, and finally, Broadway ( at the Cort Theatre— where the Marx Brothers played), and was thrilled by two Antoinette Perry awards (Tonys) for that production.
